Week 12 - Match-up Snap Shot

At first glance, here are a few of the match-ups that look good to me. [There are European fixtures this week, to watch those for indications of starters, and for injuries].

Newcastle (vs. Sheffield) --> Rossi?? Martins, Duff, Parker, Carr, Harper

ManU (vs. Pompey). --> Rooney, Ronaldo, Saha, Heinze (Evra may be injured)

Liverpool (vs. Reading). --> Kuyt, Riise, Crouch?? [but only if you can figure out Rafa's rotation], Gerrard

Maybe Boro (@ Watford). --> Yak, Downing, Young

Maybe Bolton (vs. Wigan) --> Haim Tal, Campo? Speed?
Week 11 Quickies

ManU keep humming along, looking a potent attacking force. They spanked Bolton at the Reebok 4-0, with Rooney exploding for a treble and a massive YFF score.

Chelsea were again solid, with Lampard firing them to a win. Ballack scored for the second game running, and I don't think there is a "filler" (if you got him for 4.19) available that has as much legitimate potential to score every week. Watch the Champs League game, as Sheva & Drogba are reported slightly injured.

Liverpool looked much better at home this week, ending Villa's undefeated streak with a solid 3-1 win. While Gerrard yet again failed to score, Kuyt was lively and looks class.

Spurs fired another blank, as Jol rotated strikers again, leaving red-hot Mido out in favour of Berbatov.

Everton ground high-flying Arsenal into a 1-1 draw. The stacked midfield did not give much support to AJ, but he was still full of running. Henry had 7 attempts and 3 on goal, so he seems to be picking it up and looks a real goal threat weekly.

Lack of Sleep

Once again, I was up early (6AM) to finalize my YFF roster. But for once forgoing sleep has paid off, as the Chelsea starting line-up was announced just prior to the roster lock down. This was music to my ears, as I had 3 or 4 decisions/potential moves riding on getting that little nugget of information in time. It confirmed Robben as a starter (with Joe Cole!) and Hilario in place of Cudicini, and most importantly, Jose left Sheva & Ca$hley Cole out, with an eye on Barca mid-week. As a result, I was luckily able to make a few last-second tweaks (phew!). It actually got the heart racing a bit because I was worried that I would get caught mid-click and be frozen out by Yahoo, resulting in an incomplete XI and thus not get any points this week. It it all worked out this time. However, I am really looking forward to that nap later today...

[Edit: My Sheva replacement, Benni McCarthy, scored 7.5 points, which is better than zero I suppose...]

Week 11 Struggles

I'm finding this week to be extremely difficult - there are no clear cut "good" picks and numerous injury doubts that made it slim pickings. Especially up front - personally, I can only see 3, 4 good striker picks. And the midfield is just as confusing.

The likes of Martins, Kuyt are struggling for fitness, there is no indication of who will start in the Chelsea goal or MF, Pompey defenders are doubtful - what a mess!

Maybe another late night of YFF pondering will lead to an inspired roster this week...check back with me at 6AM, LOL.

Week 10 Line-up

Here's what I went with this week:

Henry
Berbatov
AJ

Ronaldo
Arteta
Rosicky
Ballack

Lescott
Hoyte
Huddlestone

Hilario

I figure even the 3rd choice Chelsea GK should be good for a clean sheet, behind that defence. And his price is not that bad, so worth the risk.

Only problem is that a couple of the contenders in my private league have 6, 7, 8 of the same players I do this week, and the ones that do differ are not likely to make an impact (read: defender fillers, LOL), making it difficult to gain any ground.

Quick Champs League recap

Saha looked sharp again, getting off 5 goal attempts (2 on target) and really should have scored a couple of times. He also set up Scholes.

Rooney looked active and "into it", but Saha seemed more dangerous. I expect Roon to push forward more with Giggs' pending return at the weekend, and do well.

Ronaldo was also good for numerous shot attempts; his great form continues.

Drogba scored (again) for Chelsea, and Sheva continues to sputter. I wonder if Hilario has earned himself an EPL start - watch for signals from Mourinho on Friday.

Gerrard missed the game versus Bordeaux with a pulled hammy, and may be a doubt for the weekend. Bellamy started with Crouch (who scored) and Aurelio was not in the line-up as Riise was left back.

Arsenal lost in Moscow to CSKA, but Henry had 6 attempts at goal and was very unfortunate to have a goal called back for a dubious hand ball call. I think it will not be long before he translates all the shots into a 2 or 3 goal game. Not necessarily away to Reading, but soon. Rosicky did not seem as good as the weekend - I wonder if he is hit&miss in YFF terms. Fab continues to run the offense effectively, but that hasn't been generating fantasy points of late.

** Note the Balackburn and Tottenham have UEFA Cup games this week, so watch for hints on those line-ups **
Week 10 Match-ups

A few things look interesting to me this week:

AST v. FUL - Villa has been the surprise package so far this season, going undefeated thus far. Fulham have been notoriously bad on their travels the last couple of seasons, so Villa should win this one, but it will be tough one. Baros, Agbonlahor, Petrov, Barry, all could make good picks. Despite being dirt cheap, Angel hardly seems worth it -he commits too many fouls for a striker, and he seems to the be the striker the hold up and flick on the ball to the other attackers.

EVE v. SHEFF - Also looking strong so far, Everton host the EPL's worst team. Cahill, Arteta and AJ are all playing too well to ignore in a match-up like this, and there are a couple of reasonably-priced defenders available. Howard may even be the best clean sheet bet this week, as SheffU have not scored away from home yet.

TOTT v. W.HAM - Though not setting the league alight, Spurs should be able to handle the Hammers, who are giving up goals on the road and looking lost overall. Perhaps a punt on Defoe or Berbatov? Ekotto is cheap right now, but I never really fancy Spurs to keep a clean sheet.

The rest are intriguing match-ups that I would classify as slightly unpredictable. For instance, Charlton (who are horrid) are hosting Watford who have been leaking goals. And Boro host Newcastle, in a battle of two teams that are struggling. So, the odd offensive player selection could be a real steal. Yakubu, Darren Bent (maybe JFH???), Downing, come to mind in this group.

Next up, there are a couple of fixture that feature top teams, but that I predict will be verhy hard-fought, close games: ManU v. Liverpool, Chelsea host a much-improved Pompey and Arsenal away to Reading. ManU have been in scintillating form, but this will be a gritty game. Ans I don't expect Arsenal to roll over Reading at all.

Week 9 Tidbits

Having watched all the EPL games and highlights on TV this weekend, here are some impressions. Eight games into the season, some tendencies have certainly developed and patterns have evolved.

- Reading continues to be a very difficult opponent, especially at home. We've seen that in the draw they earned with ManU, and it was on display this week as they forced Chelski to grind out a hard-earned 1-0 win. Definitely not looking like relegation fodder and a style of play that has not (yet?) yielded many fantasy points to opponents.

- Charlton is just horrible and strong candidate for the drop based on current form. I would think that with Darren Bent & JFH up front, they would score some goals, but it really looks like they are bereft of creativity and service in the midfield. And the defence lacks quality. Sure, the strikers will score the odd goal, and Charlton won't suffer many goal-less games, but to me, they seem like they will lose 2-1, 3-1 every week.

- You can put West Ham in that category as well, they look awful currently.

- Newcastle is undergoing a rough stretch at the moment, with the back line particularly out of sorts. They seem like a squad likely to give up goals and YFF points, and I am starting to look at NUFC opponents weekly as potential picks.

- Chelsea continue to march along, scrapping out another tight win. Good for their title hopes, but not especially good news fantasy-wise. They are not generating many chances per game and just don't appear cohesive in the attacking third. The defence is rock solid again, but the injury blow to their GKs will be interesting. If Cudicini recovers for the weekend, he could be a bargain pick. I've seen Sheva play several times now, and he simply does not look any closer to scoring. He's not getting many shots per game and seems to be dropping deeper to collect passes. Maybe some wider wing players can supply some service that will help him. Speaking of - Robben was the Blues most dangerous player, and Joe Cole came on for 25 minutes.

- ManU are in fine form right now and look a very good attacking team. They average 20 attempts at goal per game, tops in the Premiership. Saha fired another and created numerous chances. Rooney looked much livelier and was unlucky not to score. After seeing him run all over the pitch and set up a couple of goals, I don't think it will be more than a game or 2 before he finds the net. Giggs looked very good in a 45 minute appearance as well, and his return should permit Roon to move further forward again. All of this without Ronaldo, who sat out the match.

- Arsenal are hitting stride, especially within the friendly confines of their new stadium, and seem good for several goals every time out. Rosicky started and had an eye for goal, hitting 4 SOTs, and Fabregas' passing was sublime as it orchestrated the attack. Henry scored and assisted on a goal, but still has not put in a "Henry" 30-point performance of seasons past. But it will come.

- Ashley Young played most of the game against the Gunners as a striker, or at least in a very advanced support striker role.

- Bellamy scored for Liverpool, but the Reds continue to flounder a bit, drawing with Rovers. And Rafa's squad rotation make YFF picking difficult. Personally, I anxiously await a break-out game from Stevie G.

- Tottenham just never give me a sense that they will win or keep a clean sheet.

- Villa remain undefeated after another draw; a great start to the season for a team that hovered at the bottom of the table last year. They seem to be a solid bet at home, though picking their goal andYFF point scorers is a bit of a guessing game right now.

Week 9 Early Status Report

Well, a mixed bag of YFF results today; tough to know how it will translate into fantasy points.
[All stats are based on either SkySports or Yahoo match-casts, the 2 sources I find to be most reliable. Unlike the Soccernet gamecast, which, despite its cool graphical shot chart, often attributes blocked shots as SOTs].

Samaras - 1 SOT
Henry - 1 SOT, 1G, 1A (would be nice if he actually covered his cost for once!)
hopefully they each won some corners.

Arteta - 1 shot off target
but Everton had 13 corners, so he may have managed some succesful crosses.
Rosicky - 4SOT
good, but most in my group have him.
Ronaldo - no show

Hoyte, Trabelsi - clean sheets, but not much more I expect.

Weaver - no show, but at least it was not a negative score.

Still to play: Essien, Sheva, Pearce.
F**k Me

Saha starts the game and Ronaldo is not fit enough to even make the bench. Line-ups weren't announced until after the YFF deadline...ARGH!!! That's 14 units left on the sidelines that could have been better spent.

The impact will be minimal, as all the guys in my league also have him, but I could have used a boost in the overall world rankings.

And now there is a story in the Sun that reports Walcott will start for the Gunners today!! It did not specify where he could slot in, but that could put Rosicky, Hleb, RVP's place in jeopardy...

Week 9 "Favourites"

Some of the teams I fancy to perform well this week include:

- Arsenal
- ManU
- Chelsea
- ManCity
- Villa
- Everton

Not exactly a stretch, as all these teams, bar ManCity, find themselves at or near the top of the table, and facing mediocre opponents.

Week 9 International fall-out

Some of the YFF implications:

- Sheva took 9 shots against Scotland, 4 on target, and scored from the spot.
- Rooney looked sluggish in both of England's games.
- Rosicky played 90 minutes against Ireland and set up Koller's goal.
- Ronaldo scored twice against a week opponent on Saturday, and played both games.
- Kuyt went off injured in the first game, missed the second. I'd consider him doubtful for the weekend - but wait for match previews. Crouch anyone ;)
- Kranjcar seemed lively according to match reports (5 attempts, 2 SOT, some crosses).

- Arsenal trio Eboue, Ljungberg and Baptista all picked up injuries and will miss the next 2 games. Info here. Hmm, does that make Djourou or Hoyte a nice, cheap option?
- Samaras scored for Greece.
- RVP bagged goals in both of Holland's qualifiers.

International Break

No YFF this week, as there is an international break. Keep an eye open for EPL players representing their countries - good performances, potential injuries, etc.

I'm normally from the school of thought that a good mid-week showing for a player will carry over to the weekend Premiership fixtures, a continuation of good form, if you will. Nothing concrete to back that theory up, but a sense that players' confidence does carry over. With one more Euro qualifier in a few days, we'll see if the likes of Rooney, Saha, Henry can kick it up a gear...

Week 7 Disaster!

This week's picks did not turn out that great. $22 unit Henry's meagre return was less than half his cost. Two other picks were not even in the line-up for the weekend (and the replacement defender I was seriously considering [Dailly], aside from at the very least playing, recorded a shot on target). And Saha never left the bench. Ugh, not much good about that.

So it's time to regroup and focus on the next round.
